Free Summer STEM Camp

Oklahoma students in grades 9-12 in fall 2025 are welcome to register to attend a free summer STEM camp at Northwestern Oklahoma State University-Alva June 1-6.

Registration for “Renewable Energy – The Future is Here – Exploring and Learning Today: A Summer STEM Camp” will open March 1 and close April 1 and is limited to 25 students.

Check-in for all campers will be from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, in Fryer Hall residence hall on the southwest corner of campus. Campers will be welcomed and complete an orientation into the week’s events. The camp will end on Friday, June 6, at noon. Students will eat several meals in the Coronado Cafeteria during the camp.

A registration form and camp schedule may be found at www.nwosu. edu/stem-summercamp beginning March 1.

This camp is funded by a grant from the Oklahoma Regents for Higher Education. Northwestern will play host to the camp along with High Plains Technology Center of Woodward, OG&E, and NextEra Energy, the largest producer of wind and solar power in the nation.

“This is a great educational opportunity for these high school students,” Dr. Tim Maharry, professor of mathematics and chair of the mathematics and computer science department, said.

During the camp, students will engage in hands-on learning with professionals in higher education as well as professionals in the field of renewable energy.

Students will get an inside view of an operating nacelle, experience simulators and a climbing tower, and see an operational Renewable Energy Site. Students will learn about the generation and use of electricity as well as an introduction to electronics and robotics. Students also will have hands-on experiences with the Renewable Energy Trainer. This portable Microgrid training device includes power generation, a micro- inverter, and storage using renewable energy technology.

Students will also build and assemble a wind turbine and learn about solar power and hydroelectric power.

The camp also will include field trips to Alabaster Caverns State Park, High Plains Technology Center in Woodward, and the Sooner Wind site near Mooreland.

For more information about the camp, contact Maharry at tjmaharry@nwosu.edu or (580) 3278583.
