Broke His Arm
Euel Walthall is wearing his arm in a sling as the result of an endeavor to master a fractious horse.
At the barn one day last week Euel got into an altercation with an unruly animal and before the affair had ended, he had sustained a bad fracture of his right arm just above the wrist
Water Mains Arrive
The water mains for the water works extension began arriving last week and are being hauled out and distributed along the line.

ELECTS SUPERINTENDENT
At the regular meeting of the Board of Education held Monday night, Sup. I..S Hinshaw was tendered a three year contract to remain in his present position, but with a few well-chosen remarks in which he thanked the board for both the honor and also their hearty cooperation during the time he has been at the head of the schools he refused to consider the contract.
S.B. Sivells was chosen as his replacement.
Time to Clean Up
The season of the year has again arrived when all citizens should clean up their premises and have all trash and rubbish hauled off and disposed of.

18,113 Bales of Cotton Ginned in McIntosh County
According to L. C. Roork, special agent of the Dept. of Commerce there were 18,113 bales of cotton ginned in McIntosh County.

COUNCIL HOLDS A RAY OF HOPE ON WATERWORKS A faint ray of hope that the city of Checotah will be granted a $40,000 cash loan by the federal government with which to build a waterworks system here, is held by member of the city council and Mayor L.K. Sharpe.

The Stars And Bars
From somewhere in the Southwest Pacific, we got a letter this week from Carl Tucker – now Pfc. Tucker – of the United States Army.
His idea in writing was to tell the editor of his change in address so that the Democrat would reach him with more regularity.
Dog Tabulation Finished in City
Tabulation of the dogs in Checotah, which was ordered by the mayor and council in an effort to collect taxes on every canine in the city, as completed this week by Mrs. Jesse Mae Curry.
Seventy-two persons had previously paid taxes on dogs and Mrs. Curry collected an additional 33, making a total of 105 tax paid dogs in the city.
Democrat Observes its 37th Birthday
The McIntosh County Democrat, Checotah’s oldest business institution, observes its 37th birthday with publication of this issue of the paper.
The Democrat was founded by George Wetzell in 1907 just two weeks before statehood. After the elder Wetzell’s death the paper was published by his son, Herbert Wetzell until Nov. 1, 1929. The present editor has owned and operated the paper for the past 15 years.

Air Rifle Shooting Banned By Council
Shooting BB guns will not be permitted in the city limits in the future, members of the city council decreed at a meeting Monday night.
Girl Breaks Back in Fall From Tree
Alma Parsons, 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Parsons, suffered a broken back late Tuesday afternoon when she fell out of a tree in the yard of her parents’ home on North Broadway.
She was taken to the Checotah Osteopathic hospital for emergency treatment and then to the General Hospital in Muskogee

Curtis Winkle was re-elected to his job as City Clerk last Tuesday by beating challenger Beth Frost, 383 to 192 in the Democratic Primary.
Winkle has served as City Clerk for 10 years and his new term will be for four years.
The turnout was a good one for a city election, with 575 votes being cast.

Hundreds pack Eufaula Elementary School to defend lake, confront politicians
As the briefest of winter rainstorms began to swell and gather over the parched and dying banks of Lake Eufaula, the lien of cars backed up all the way o the edge of town. Their taillights glowed red through the deepening night, pointing the way towards another gathering storm – this one brewing in the cafeteria of Eufaula Elementary School. They had to park on the grass and curbs and sidewalks, the people who’d come to defend their lake, and they crammed themselves inside the cafeteria – sitting and standing and squatting and lining the walls to the turn of over 400 souls.

Checotah teacher rallies at the capitol
Thousands of parents, teachers, and students from across the state converged at the Oklahoma State Capital Monday to rally for better education.
Checotah government teacher and Academic Team Coach Lawrence Lane was among those who attended the rally to meet with legislators and get answers.
“It is my goal to represent public education and to let people know that as educators we have a vested interest in Oklahoma. We want to focus on testing, teacher pay, working conditions,” said Lane.
