Officials are investigating a standoff last week that left a suspect dead and a house partially burned.

A man identified as John Barry died in the early morning hours of Monday, April 7 during a shootout with lawmen at his residence south of Interstate 40 on new Texanna Road.

District 25 Narcotics and Violent Crime Task Force In- vestigator Kevin Branscum said Barry fled from police following an altercation in Checotah Sunday night.

The suspect went to his property where a standoff ensued.

Branscum said at one point Barry fled the residence but returned.

“He was always isolated to his property,” he said.

Apparently during the event there was some confusion as to where the shooting was taking place.

During the shootout, the house caught fire but the fire was extinguished by firefighters with the Texanna Fire Department.

The suspect later was found dead in the house.

The cause of death is under investigation, Branscum said.

Several agencies were involved, including the McIntosh County Sheriff ’s Office, District 25 Narcotics and Violent Crime Task Force, Checotah Police Department, Eufaula Police, Cherokee Marshal Services, Muscogee Creek Nation Police, and the OHP tactical team.
