Oklahoma State University has announced it will name one of its athletic facilities in honor of legendary wrestling coach John Smith, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential figures in the history of the sport.
The decision recognizes Smith’s extraordinary impact on Oklahoma State wrestling, where he built a powerhouse program that became synonymous with excellence. During his tenure as head coach, Smith guided the Cowboys to multiple NCAA team championships and produced a long list of All-Americans and individual national champions.
Smith, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and one of the most decorated wrestlers in American history, returned to his alma mater to lead the program and quickly established a standard that few have matched. His tenure spanned more than three decades, during which Oklahoma State consistently ranked among the nation’s elite programs.
University officials said naming the facility after Smith is a fitting tribute to a coach whose influence extends far beyond wins and titles.
Under Smith’s leadership, Oklahoma State captured five NCAA team titles and secured dozens of individual national championships. His athletes were known for their discipline, toughness and technical skill, qualities that became hallmarks of the Cowboys program.
Beyond the mat, Smith’s impact has been felt through his mentorship of generations of student-athletes, many of who have gone on to successful careers both in and out of wrestling.
The newly named facility will serve as a daily reminder of that legacy, inspiring current and future Cowboys to strive for the same level of excellence.
A formal dedication ceremony is expected to take place later this year, where former athletes, colleagues and fans will gather to celebrate Smith’s contributions to Oklahoma State and the sport of wrestling.
